For some odd reason, many students do well in school, yet struggle with every portion of the FCAT exam. I have invested considerable time in developing a program which helps students pass the FCAT. I can go on and on about it because it is a passion of mine, however, I will be brief:
In the FCAT sessions, I focus on reading, writing, and math.
The reading part: I teach they an exact way to read each FCAT passage and questions. This helps the student focus on the material being read and eliminates their imagination being put into the reading. This is important because their are several questions on the FCAT, where they are looking for the author's point of view. This is impossible to answer when the student cannot seperate their imagination from fact.
Writing: I teach each student a three-step method to creating paragraphs. With this structure, the students take the mystery out of how to write a paragraph and now can focus on the content!
Math: I take the student back to the very basics of math. No matter what the grade, my first math session is about what a fraction is. (which is simply a division problem and a piece of pie.) This concept is the basis of my tutoring for math. I break each topic down the it's simplest form and build upon it.
Finally, I assign each student a weekly or biweekly homework assignment, to be completed. My expectations from the students are perfect scores on the FCAT. After a several sessions, they actually believe they can do it!
